We’ve just had our week long Troop Summer Camp here. We stayed on the Hurst Field, which was ideal for our purposes. This was the largest Troop Camp we’ve had in over 25 years, and the site was perfect – apart from the weather!
On site staff were very friendly and helpful, and the tuck shop had a really god range of products for sale.
Toilets and showers were both excellent, clean and well maintained.
We only used some of the on site activities: the cave bus, pedal karts, grass sleds, and pioneering from the self led activities and the instructor led angel throwing and fencing, again both were excellent.
Having just returned from a Friday to Sunday camp with 21 Cubs and 5 leaders I would like to say a big thank you to everyone at Ashworth Valley for making our weekend. Staff were helpful and accommodating, even assisting to relocate a huge event shelter. The pitch was excellent, loads of room for the tents enabling a proper layout rather that 6 ins between tents because there is limited room. Facilities were first class and easily accessible.
It is very convenient for Cubs from Bacup to access and that makes a big difference. The site is small enough for you not to worry about losing any children and they all had a fantastic time. Their best bits… climbing, archery, man hunt in the woods, lighting a fire and orienteering. Worst bits… trying to get to sleep in a tent and it raining in on me in the tent.
I would recommend this site to all uniformed groups.
We stayed in the Janet Cotton lodge for our Brownies pack holiday. The site staff were all very helpful and flexible. The activities were great, we got instructors from Rock and River for a few and ran others ourselves. The campfire circle was great. The lodge was clean and tidy and had all the equipment we needed. The girls had a great time even though it rained all day Saturday. Excellent value for money too.
Our local campsite and much loved by the Scouts and Leaders alike. Quick and easy to get to even when there’s a few hundred campers around you, the wardens have accessibility controlled from gate to car park!
Wardens are friendly and very welcoming, even coming over to introduce himself and asking if any help setting up was needed. Love camping on Birtle field always maintained to a high standard that’s perfect for camping. The Ranch House and Pack Holiday Centre are fully equipment with the essentials and a great value for money.
Fires, wood pile and water points are easily located around the site. An excellent campfire circle free to use throughout your stay! Outdoor toliets and washrooms have in recent years been renovated and are regularly cleaned by staff onsite.
A good range of activities are available however it’s such a shame Ashworth Valley don’t have their own onsite instructors for adventurous activities like others around us. However from previous experience booking with Rock and River is completed with ease and their instructors are great, just a shame the cost and group numbers aren’t viable at present for my Troop to enjoy the full extent.
Overall a spacious campsite which is ran by a friendly dedicated team.. We can’t wait to return in the Winter season!
One of the best maintained Scout camp sites I’ve been to. The grass was kept short and everywhere was clean and tidy. The site warden team were very helpful and friendly and it’s the first time I’ve had a warden come over and introduce themselves to us, which was really nice. There’s a well-stocked wood pile and enough dead fall in surrounding woodlands that there’s no problem with getting wood for camp fires.
We’ve just had our Group Camp at Ashworth Valley where we’ve had approx 100 people camping on the Birtle Field. We’d also booked the Ranch House for catering.
The climbing wall looks extremely impressive on arrival at camp and has a great zip line off the top of it, although you don’t need to climb the wall to use the zip line (there’s an internal staircase).
The Cave Bus was possibly the most popular activity of the camp. If you’ve not booked this before I would strongly recommend it, as would a lot of young people from our Group. It’s suitable for all ages, Beavers right through to Explorers and leaders. It gets more challenging with age, or more specifically as the kids grow so it makes it ideal for any group. It’s well priced, you can supervise it easily yourself and there are various escape routes making it possible for someone with serious claustrophobia to have a go without having to do it all.
If I had any negative comments to make at all it would be the price of the instructor led activities but these are provided by Rock and River so I’m not taking that into consideration in my review. Booking multiple activities like this gets expensive, especially as some activities like the zip line need two instructors. However, their instructors were friendly, helpful and nice and encouraging when dealing with the kids.
The site has a brilliant camp fire circle. The best I’ve been to. The tiered seating is plenty wide enough for everyone to join in lots of action songs without falling over each other and the acoustics are great and really lift it. There’s even a slide to leave the camp fire circle.
Overall, a lovely camp site, great wardens, nice setting and we’ll be back!
10 out of 10, despite Gale force winds and torrential rain we had a fantastic week camp. The staff (all volunteers) couldn’t have been more helpful. They came out to check we were okay, even going so far as offering us the indoor accommodation if we needed it! Thankfully it’s a well drained site and the anticipated mud never arrived. We didn’t use any of the onsite activities so can’t comment on them. The surrounding area has some great hikes with wonderful view
Stayed here with our brother and sister scouts from the FSE during the Rover moot. Fantastic Site. Good camping group. Very nice and clean toilets.
We spent last week in the pack holiday centre at Ashworth Valley with 20 Cubs from Dublin. This was our second visit and we had another fantastic camp. The staff were, as always, excellent. They make the whole process from initial booking to all your requirements during your stay so easy. Always ready to help and advise. The campsite is wonderful and the improvements since our last visit are amazing, made our stay even better. Ashworth valley is one of our favourite scout camps to visit when we travel outside of Ireland. We look forward to our next visit.
We have just returned from a week long Annual Camp at Ashworth Valley. We travelled from Dublin with 12 cub scouts. We could not have been made more welcome by the camp wardens & staff. We were treated like old friends and nothing was too much trouble. The campsite is spotlessly clean, the Pack Holiday Centre is fantastic – fully equipped for 32 people – so no need to bring kitchen utensils etc! Plenty of room to run an indoor program if the weather is bad. And with an adventure playground right beside it, the leaders get some time off! Plenty of onsite activities and wide open fields for the kids to run around. There’s a swimming pool in the local village which was very accommodating also. The onsite tuck shop was brilliant-for the cubs & leaders alike! We would highly recommend Ashworth Valley as a wonderful campsite to visit. We are already looking forward to returning to Ashworth for another summer camp!
Fantastic weekend great indoor accommodation showers and more activity’s than required . Made very welcome a quality site with free wifi for the leaders. View website and see camping areas all in the Pennines.
